Sister Mary Kohn

Hola, te huele la cola (teeheehee), Let me give you some Sistory of little ol' me: I was introduced to the Sisterhood by a friend one day while visiting a bar in Silverlake. There I met Sister Erotica and she gave me a card with the web site address. I later met Sister Rhoda Kill (out of face; this means without the white make-up and not without a face, teeheehee), she spoke with me and encouraged me to hang out with the Sisters. I knew nothing about the organization, but being the Virgo I am, I did my research. I posted a question on this web site and then met with Sister Unity regarding the question. She added to what I already learned about the organization and was very welcoming. I then spoke with my "morefriend" (more then a friend, but not a boyfriend) letting him know of my intent of joining this group of Drag Nuns. I felt this was important because of what was referred to as a Sister Widow (the partner of a Sister that might sometimes feel like a "widow" because of the time consumption the Sisterhood might take away from the relationship). I officially joined the LA Order September 20, 2005. Becoming Sister Mary Kohn didn't happen over night. In fact Sister Bruja Reyna Capulina Carla Cristina Eduina Chonita Manula Hadas, or as most people knew her "Sister Bruja", had to hop on her broom and fly away for Sister Mary Kohn ("mahree kone" and if pronounce right it sounds like maricon, which means faggot in Spanish) to be come around. It is not uncommon for Sisters to change her name from time to time. In my case, my Sister journey lead me to such a change of going back to the original sin, I mean original name, yeah that's want I meant to write. Our past makes up who we are, but it doesn't always dictate who we will become. So let me give you Sister Mary Kohn's past life and at the same time educate you on the phases of becoming a Sister within the LA House because it is different for every House. As an Aspirant (which is the unofficial first phase of becoming a Sister), I was thinking of using the name of Mary Kohn. but it was too abrasive for some. So I looked at what was important for me in my Sister name and that was letting my ethnicity (American of Mexican descent) come across while wearing the white face. As a Postulant (the first official phase of becoming a Sister), I went by the name of Postulant Bruja Reyna Capulina, but Bruja for short. In Spanish: Bruja means witch, Reyna means queen, and Capulina means black widow. Things I associated myself with and came across in my habit. As my Sister journey progressed, so did my Sister name. As a Novice (the second official phase of becoming a Sister and the phase where the title of Sister is bestowed), I added three more names. I was known as Novice Sister Bruja Reyna Capulina Carla Kristina Eduina. The names were in honor of three other Sisters that had a significant impact on my Sister journey. At last, a year later (it takes a minimum of a year) the final addition was added to my Sister name. I became a Fully Professed Member (FPM), also known as, a Black Veil (the final phase of becoming a Sister) on September 19, 2006. I added my last three names in loving memory of my mother and brother. The Hadas part means fairies. I was now known as Sister Bruja Reyna Capulina Carla Kristina Eduina Chonita Manuela Hadas, but Sister Bruja for short. As Sister Bruja I was able to travel to other Houses and learned from them. With knowledge comes growth and responsibility. The Universe showed me that going back to the beginning was the best thing for me, so I went back to my original name of Mary Kohn. The name Mary Kohn, can still be a little abrasive for some, but that to shall pass once he or she deals with the issue of why it is abrasive for him or her. Sister Mary Kohn is not here to cause discomfort but to comfort and help all that want to be helped. Sister Mary Kohn, still honors and embraces parts of Sister Bruja, which still come out with every manifestation. Why did I join: I finally found an organization that gives the idea of diversity education, HIV and AIDS awareness, self-acceptance, and self-empowerment to the GLBT Community in such a way that is fun and personal compared to preachy and disconnected. As a bonus it also adds using creative make-up in conjunction with volunteering. "Did I read correctly? Did Sister Mary Kohn just write volunteering?" Yes sweetie, you read correctly, volunteering which means we DONATE our time, and finance our own traveling expenses, buy our own make-up, and most of the time buy our own jewelry. Why do we do it? Because of YOU!! The calling is out there for some to become a 21st century Nun, and honey, I answered that phone. Well, sweetie, that is Sister Mary Kohn's Sistory. Feel free to grab me, I mean contact me, yeah that's what I mean via this web site. Until our paths cross, be true to yourself and above all love yourself so that you are able to love others. Let me leave you with this little Haiku: When you feel perplexed The Universe will provide A loving white face This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
