Reverend Mother ~ Sister Gladass

In the late 1980's my former partner, Father Butch (a.k.a. Sister Helen on Wheels) invited me to join the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, San Francisco. My original sponsor in the order was Sister Julia Sunbeam. My first manifestation as a postulant was Halloween on the Castro, which the Sisters produced to support local charities. I spent several years with the order in San Francisco. At the same time I was a member of SPI, San Francisco, I was very active on the Board of Directors for San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Day Parade & Celebration Committee. I served as the Secretary and Presient of the Board for a number of years. In addition to this, I was also an executive Director for the California Association of Pride, Inc. Through my extensive involvement in the Pride movement, I made numerous friends throughout California, Nevada and Arizona. However, before leaving the Bay area, I requested to be placed on Missionary Status with the San Francisco Mother House. This allowed me to continue the work of the Sisterhood in Southern California. A year after I left San Francisco, a very good friend of mine (Sister Candy Cide) encouraged me to begin the process of founding the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Los Angeles. In December of 1995, Sister Candy and I met with the president of SPI, SF and received preliminary approval to begin the process of establishing the Sisters in L.A. Shortly thereafter, Sister Candy had recruited four others interested and willing to join the adventure. Thus we began the process of coming out to the Los Angeles community. |
